I have been tasked creating on making a 3D bus stop shelter that fits the needs of the user and environmental conditions. Within this task I got to explore comfort, inclusive, safety and sustainability while exploring form, materials and functionality. This will be shown in my final design and how the model can help everyday use and to encourage the use of public transportation. This will be a bus stop design on behalf of MV Studio.
A NDA is a none disclose agreement which is a legally binding document when a company and client can’t say what they are working on as that would breach it. For this assignment there is no NDA.
The project is being developed because the current bus stop is ran down and is in need of a modernizing to fit the health and safety regulations of today. Overtime the elements have gotten to this bus stop and has slowly began to decay making it shut down permanently however, this project will show what it can be. In hopes that the tourists will be able to get transport due to being located outside a B&B. The bus stop is also from WW2 and has gone into a trust to reserve it.
Work-Experience-Map
Dunchurch Rugby Warwickshire CV22 6NX will be the bus stop which I will be refurbishing due to it being shut down permanently and can be bought back to life. However, due to the location I am limited on what I can do as it is right next to a junction and that I do not want to obstruct the view of drivers for safety reasons.
I choose this site as it is very similar to what I wish to build and thought that it would be fun trying to revamp a older bus stop compeered to trying to create a fully original bus stop. It is also a bus stop which is permanently closed and would be good to redesign and imagine what it could have looked like if it was to of gotten a revamp.
I like the fact that their is a outside seating area for bright and sunny days as well as there is a red phone box right next to it. I also like the local notice board outside the bus stop allowing locals to advertise. I also like the fact it is hut like meaning there is shelter for people.
I don’t like that it is on a crossroads which could lead to dangerous hazers so looking for a place for the bus to go in. I also don’t like the mixture of materials used such as wood and stone brick this would also lower the chance of warmth and will deter people away from catching the bus in cold weather.
I plan on improving the elemental resistances so the bus stop doesn’t need much maintaining since the current bus stop has been harmed by the elements. I also plan on adding a layby for which bus can go into to make it more safer.
The client doesn’t have any personal design choices but within functionality they do. The functionality needs to make minimum environmental damage so things such as aluminium will be good for the bench as it is lightweight and highly corrosion-resistant metal so it would rust slower. It will also need to fit the needs of the disabled people for example those in wheel chairs so accessibility is important.
Cladding plans go here
Feedback goes here
In order to resister and operating local bus services I would need to evolve the following parties:
Senior/Traffic Commissioner – They are regulators of the road transport industry and are responsible for issuing operator’s licences and maintaining the register of local bus services. They act independently to the government and other agencies. Their main role is to assure safe and reliable operators of goods and passenger vehicles are permitted to be licensed. The Senior Traffic Commissioner is appointed with legal powers to deploy traffic commissioners.
Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) – These are people that assure that operators of goods and passenger vehicles are within the legal registration and checks the roadworthiness. They also check in with the bus drivers making sure that they are fit enough to drive along the roads. They also get the local authorities to promote punctuality so the busses don’t run late. They also investigate complaints about the running of local services which may involve carrying out monitoring of local services.
Local Transport Authority – Local transport authorities work with operators to develop policies for the promotion and encouragement of safety of the public. They also assure the efferently and fits within the community choices. They also do the integrated transport when appropriate. They would also want to see a draft proposal of the bus stop so a Cladding plan would be relevant as well as information to go with it. The local transport authority may then consider how the local transport requirements in that area will be met and request further information from the operator if required. The Local Transport Authorities vary or cancel local bus services. But classed with traffic commissioner.
Role of the Department for Transport – The Secretary of State for Transport works with the government responsible for determining the legal requirements of operator licensing and local bus services, in doing so establishing the roles and responsibilities of the traffic commissioners and DVSA. Traffic commissioners are independent of Government.
There are a few requirements and restrictions. However, bus shelters do not require planning permission unless they feature an advertising panel but, due to me wanting to include a notice board that can advertise it falls into this category.
I have consider using materials which don’t need to be heavily maintained this is good because then maintenance doesn’t have to come out and harm the environment.
The client would like the materials to fit within the local area and not to look too modern as they are worried that it would bring a decrease of property value down as well as the bus stop. However, they are open to new materials as long as it will fit with their requirements.
In the local area there is a lot of outside greenery with a outside bench to. This also marked as public area and therefore, can be used by anyone having a premade bench outside will cater for outside sitting. There is already plenty of grass nearby and old fashioned houses which will help with property value.
As of the current design it is flat allowing push chairs and wheel chairs to access the bus stop easily however, if they was to wait outside there will be issues with the space as it is directly on a road. To cater for this I have decided to move the bus stop further back allowing more foot room. We will also trim one meter of grass to the left allowing a little space between the bus stop and the bench.
There are buildings around the local area of the bus stop which is a mix of both old and new houses. The bus stop is almost a mid point between the old and new builds. Most of the older houses are using stone bricks which was a huge design choice for the bus stop to.
There is no later construction need to be taken into account now this is because the design goals of the bus station is make sure that it is environmentally resistant and require very low maintenance. This is a good sustainable way of reducing construction and the further down costs. The grass around the area will need trimming however, that cost is maintained via the council.
Legal requirements in how big a bus stop is, but planning guidelines recommend a minimum of 1.5m x 4.0m for cantilever style bus stops and 2.0m x 4.0m for enclosed bus stops
Dry stone: This is because it would fit well within the local area and require less maintaining as dry stone has been known to be long standing with maintenance being required at the minimum of 150 years.
Concrete tiles: This is where the cost is the lowest as we choose to cheap out due to the cost already. However, these come very standers on houses newer days and are reliable if anything need reworking or construction it will be this
Frosted windows: This is a design choice as that I thought is needed this is because I don’t want it to feel too cramped within the building and to have some resistances to wind and rain.
Aluminum bench: This is because Aluminum has a good chance at not rusting and can survive the longest with the natural environment. Which will again reduce the amount of maintenance needed.
In order to find the cost we got to find out how much each materials is and the labour needed. Due to not wanting to harm the image of the local area I have deiced what materials I want to use.
Dry stone wallers charge £200 to £300 per square meter, Cotswold grey £250 per tonne which is equal to approximately 1 tonne of stone per square meter.
The total price of the Dry stone would be…..
I have also wanted to include frosted windows this is because I don’t want it to feel claustrophobic and let natural light inside full Window (frame + glass + labor) £400–£800 per window installed. However, including glass could prove to be dangerous because there is a chance that vandalism could happen and proportionally harm someone. However, due to it being on the outside of Dorchester and being in country side the chance of vandalism is low.
The total price of a full window X 4 = £1,600 – £3,200.
I also want to have concrete tiles are the most affordable option at £2-£4 per square foot for materials this is where the budget has been cut due to how much we have spent on the higher materials.
The total price of the roof will be…..
Lastly we have the inside which will contain a bench made from aluminum as this has high resistance to rust. I have decided to go with Extruded aluminum benches which can cost £155 – £2,000 I am aiming for around £1,000 this is because I would also like to add lumber support for the advantage person back.
The total price of the bench will be £1,000
Total price or together will be….
The fees are based upon the advantage prices throughout the UK meaning they may fluctuate in price and therefore, this is not a accurate amount.
To make it a increase of value you got to make sure that it doesn’t damage the properties around it. Due to being located in the middle of nowhere and no public transport nearby refurbishing the bus stop is a great idea. We also need to keep the bus stop well maintained otherwise properties near by and the bus stop itself will lower in value. By encouraging people to use the bus prices will go up this is because it is more Eco efficiency as less fumes.
One particular view is that it has to be accessible to all people so disabilities must be equated for. To do this we shall have spaces within the bus stop for people with wheel chairs to park up. It must also be environmentally resistant this is because it would need less maintaining and would be cheaper in the long run.

This bus stop is located at DT2 9PB and has very similar features to the one I want to create. This was my original idea on what to create as it not that far away however, in my production I want to use a way to import google map data into my scene to give me a strong reference and understanding of what I want to create but unfortunately this wasn’t available. This bus stop contains more features which I will be including in my remake such as the stone bricks and inside seating and notice board.

Of course the original bus stop is a inspiration however, I plan on moving the structure a full 90 degrees to become the bus stop itself. I plan on using better structuring to best fit the enviourment as it sticks out like a saw thumb. I chose this for the reason it is very similar to the one I hope to create and has the

I used Earth Studio to get a 3D scan of the area. Thanks to ThatJoshGuy for finding it. This gave me a solid start on the world and scale. Though the textures and topology isn’t great so I will be redoing the world.

After that I decided to edit out the roads and hide them this is because this gives me the road layout so I can start to make my own. This is because the textures aren’t that great.

I then created a rough version of what the road shape is and the islands to give the look I am going for. However, this needs to tiding up

After some tiding I then planned where I wanted to add the camera. This is a important part of presenting because it is not nicely presented the studio may not like it.

Creating the brick wall lead me to get experimental and see what modifiers blender has to offer

So this alright but I can do much better. I do think the method was good however, it didn’t help with rotations and stuff making the scene look very of. I shall we start but make it better. But will be using the same methods.

So this is the more refined version so far there is still little issues with it and that it doesn’t look like the bus stop I had in plan this is because of the following faults
But despite this the selling point is still there and due to my poor time management I have had to stick with this. For now until I have caught up with myself.

I found out that the bricks on my house are
8.5 inch width
2.5 inch height
4.5 inch length
I then converted that into meters which gave me:
0.216 meters width
0.0635 meters height
0.114 meters length

Remembering that legal requirements in how big a bus stop is, but planning guidelines recommend a minimum of 1.5m x 4.0m for cantilever style bus stops and 2.0m x 4.0m for enclosed bus stops I decided to make sure it will fit within that range.

This is the measurements so far however, the wall looks too perfect it’s all straight without any differences which destroys the look of realism. But adding it still makes it look organised which sucks. Now we got the bricks we can now add a pillar on each side and bool it this is because there are no point bricks coming out of walls and they are flat. I then duplicated it and assured that it had 4 walls then is because most buildings have 4.

Now it is time to do the outside version of it this is adding the windows and doors ectara before we make a start on the inside.

Just used bools in order to get the holes add the frames inside and inside them I added a plane which I plan on making glass. I also added a floor which is again just a plane.

.

My attempt at shading before my friend got me blenderkit then I just spammed materials cause at this point I lost motivation to the project.

Bus stop is now done.

I dumped it into the original scene to see how it would look with some low res trees and rocks because it struggled to load the entire thing. When real trees and rocks and houses was included.

This is with it being rendered not bad but I could have done a lot better if I didn’t keep wanting to redo it again and again and not having the right area to start in overall been a good learning experience.

Stand alone bus stop but looks super strange as some of the meshes broke during rendering.
All together I don’t think I did that well this is because when you are told to model something over doing it in your own time you feel more pressure which lead to me falling behind. I am also not into that much realism as I prefer to do stylised builds which means I explored something new and didn’t like it.
I find modelling interesting and that I want to continue doing it however, my experience isn’t there yet as I am still learning and understanding different things such as if you was to model a bus stop or house you need to think like a architect understand how things are built. Understanding the area of modelling which you want to go down is important.
